Japan vs UAE (AFC Asian Cup, 23.01.2015)

After cruising through the group stage, defending Asian Cup champions Japan are set to clash with their toughest opponent yet, United Arab Emirates. Japan won their group by scoring 7 goals in all three matches without conceding and UAE won two of them, while losing the last one against Iran with 0-1. The bookies side with the overall favorites in this match and Japan got 1.36 odds to win while UAE got 9.00.

Javier Aguirre chose to trust the same starting eleven throughout the group stage and it paid off with terrific performances. Being led by Honda and Kagawa Japan are looking sharp on the wings and concentrated at the back. Nagamoto is another key player for Japan, he can either assist the forward line when needed or help out in defense. Okazaki is another jewel in the forward line and while the goals are expected from Honda, tipsters back Kagawa and Okazaki to score first. Yoshida is sure the constant cohesion between the players is what will help Japan overcome UAE.
United Arab Emirates finished second in their group after failing to preserve the draw that would have helped them avoid Japan in the quarterfinals. Abdulrahman is their best player and his ways of controlling the ball and subsequently the play made him one of the breakout starts of this tournament. While the majority has been concentrating on the midfield area for UAE, they might have missed Mabkhout who is clinical in front of the goal, and having scored three so far, including one after just 15 seconds from the start in the group match against Bahrain.

“From my experience in the Copa America, World Cup and the Gold Cup, I can say that our chances are the same as the other seven teams remaining,” Aguirre said. “From now we start from zero.” The bookmakers seem to disagree with said statement and give Japan 1.14 odds to qualify during regular time, and UAE got 5.00 for the same market. Japan for both halves has 1.91 odds, UAE 19.00 and over 2.5 goals 1.95 odds. In their previous four head to head matches Japan won twice, including back in 2013 for the Asian Cup, there was a draw and an UAE win from back in 2005. UAE with a +1 handicap has 3.10 odds, Japan with a -1 2.00 and we’re betting 5 units on Japan to win and both teams to score with 3.75 odds from William Hill.
