Atletico Madrid vs Real Sociedad [Recap, February 2]

Boosted by the knowledge that FC Barcelona lost surprisingly against Valencia at Camp Nou, Atletico Madrid wiped the floor with the team meant to meet Barcelona in the Copa del Rey semifinal in just a few days. We placed a bet with bet365 on both teams to score, and lost the bet, as the match ended with Atletico Madrid’s 4-0 win.

Atletico had four different goalscorers, among which David Villa, the former Barcelona striker scored on the 38th minute to give his team a first half advantage. Diego Costa Miranda and the newest transfer Diego completed the scoring table that leaves them as the sole leaders of La Liga, having a three points advantage over both Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Before the match, both teams honored their former coach and player Luis Aragones who passed away the day before. Even with the win secured, Diego Simeone and his squad wait anxiously to hear more on David Villa’s thigh injury that forced the player to request a substitution on the 41 minute. The club confirmed for the press the fact that initial tests showed the striker sustained a muscle injury on the back of his left thigh, and further tests are expected to be conducted before we know for how long he will be missing.

Atletico Madrid’s victory propelled them on the first place for this part of the La Liga for the first time in over 18 years. The 1995-1996 campaign saw Atletico on the same position as now, which goes to show just how much of an influence has Diego Simeone’s expertise had on the team. Next for Atletico Madrid is a Copa del Rey clash against Real Madrid which will be interesting to observe considering their positions in the table.
