Hamburg – Leverkusen [Recap]

May 22, 2013 0 Betting, Soccer, Sports

Bundesliga went out with a bang, the 2012-2013 edition had its fair share of records, but also disappointments, one of which was Hamburg, who lost their last home game to Leverkusen and thus failed to secure a Europa league spot. They were the better team, with the biggest chances and a Rene Adler in a great shape against his former club.

Leverkusen had one of the first openings in the game through Hegeler, but Adler was right in the spot to deflect the shot. Several minutes later van der Vaart was denied the goal by one of Leverkusen’s stoppers when he was only 5 meters from the target. Even though Leverkusen could have scored before break, Stefan Kiessling’s volley was once again deflected by Rene Adler. After the break he stopped another shot by Andre Schurrle, and had several amazing saves, but everything crashed on the 90th minute when Sidney Sam passed the ball to Kiessling who had one of the easiest tasks.

This way Kiessling (pictured below) scored his 25th goal of the season and won the title of top Bundesliga scorer, with just one goal above Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski, who was poised to win the title for the entire season. Leverkusen is sure to need him in Champions League, and he looked mighty happy to have won the prize for the work that sent his team right up with the giants of the German football.

Seeing as Leverkusen managed to win their last Bundesliga game, I managed to win the bet placed on a Bayer Leverkusen’s victory with odds from bet365, thus winning 8.05 units.

Result: +8.05 units, bet won

West Ham – Everton [Recap]

May 18, 2013 0 Betting, Soccer, Sports

The victory achieved by Everton over West Ham last Sunday was dignified and absolute, as David Moyes dashed to the centre circle for one last glimpse of a joyful Goodison Park, visibly overwhelmed. Not to  mention that I won the bet I placed on Everton at 888Sport.

Everton outclassed West Ham comfortably, but the most touching part came when Moyes, alongside outgoing club captain Phil Neville, was offered a guard of honor as the teams re-emerged five minutes after the end of the match. In addition, chairman Bill Kenwright was inevitably succumbed to sentimentality, while his manager was unable to disguise the glaze from his eyes. The scenes were unprecedented, especially because clubs of Everton’s stature would normally reserve this ovation for retiring legends, not relocating managers. “It was really emotional. I am gobsmacked and thankful and humble for what the people of Everton have shown me today.” were the words of Moyes.

Regarding the match’s evolution, Everton did everything to satisfy their manager’s wishes. Kevin Mirallas was highly prominent from the very beginning. On the other hand, Sylvain Distin had already prodded a good opportunity wide following the Belgian’s corner when he succeeded a fine move in the sixth minute. Leighton Baines, who appeared to be a possible target for his current manager, made an original run down the left before cutting inside and finding Marouane Fellaini. He squared to Steven Pienaar, who delivered the ball towards Mirallas. That was the point when the midfielder placed an emphatic finish into the bottom corner from 18 yards, and Moyes revealed his approval in the technical area.

Hamburg – Bayer Leverkusen [Prediction]

May 14, 2013 0 Betting, Soccer, Sports

This Saturday Bundesliga’s last game session of the anniversary season will feature a game for which bet365 provides the best odds.

Hamburger SV won in Hoffenheim with 4-1, and dominated the game through the whole 90 minute span. They are still hoping to snatch a last minute ticket to Bundesliga’s Europe train, provided they get some extra help from Wolfsburg who is set to play against Eintracht Frankfurt. Hamburg was without Berg, Arslan and Kacar, but welcomed back its main goalkeeper Rene Adler and defender Aogo.

Leverkusen also won their last home game against Hannover and has 62 points on the Bundesliga table. Jens Hegeler scored twice and Kiessling helped Leverkusen up to 3 goals, but Hannover wanted to challenge that and scored their only goal on the 71 minute. Now that they have secured the third spot on the table and the last direct Champions’ League group spot, they allowed themselves to celebrate the win and the subsequent good run in the Bundesliga together with their most loyal fans.

The last head-to-head game ended with Leverkusen’s 3-0 victory, where Stefan Kiessling scored three fantastic goals, one of them came from a shot that went over Rene Adler and pierced the net. While Hamburg still had the chance to change the course of the game after the first goal, their efforts stopped in Bernd Leno’s hands.

The game begins at 14:30, GMT+1 on Saturday and I’m going to bet 7 units on Leverkusen’s win at 2.15 with odds from bet365.

Atletico Madrid – Barcelona [Recap]

May 14, 2013 1 Betting, Soccer, Sports

How did Barcelona start the match against Atletico Madrid? As champions of Primera Division, seeing as Real Madrid’s draw against Espanyol allowed them mathematically to claim the title. The game itself was highly disputed even though the score was opened only in the second half by Falcao, and Alexis Sanchez fired the equalizer after 20 minutes.

It was clear from the start that Atletico had one clear strategy – to limit Barcelona’s ball possession as much as possible. That’s why their pressing from the start gave way to some really intense battles in the midfield. There were some casualties also, like Dani Alves in the first half and Lionel Messi in the second one. The Argentinean asked to be taken off field and even though he left his team in 10 people Barcelona still managed to win…or should we say Atletico won it for them seeing as the winning goal was an own one from Gabi.

Barcelona is now 10 points ahead of Real Madrid and is looking forward to break the record set by Los Blancos of having 100 points in a La Liga edition. Statistics show that the Catalans stepped up on their game after Messi was sidelined, which proves again that there is life without the Balon D’Or winner.

Atletico Madrid played a great game, and had a good run before their Cup Final against Real Madrid, but that own goal is a live proof of just how quickly everything falls down if there’s even one moment of indecision. Their free kick during the extra time served no purpose, as they probably were still too stunned to muster a comeback.

Regardless of how Barcelona came about this victory, I won the bet placed on the victory with odds from William Hill.

Everton – West Ham [Prediction]

May 9, 2013 0 Betting, Soccer, Sports

A series of important decisions are to be made between Everton and West Ham, who are meeting this Sunday for an English Premier League match. Without any doubt I will try my chances with Everton and I’ll place a bet on their victory at 888Sport.

In the last game that took place between these two teams, Everton proved to be capable of a comfortable 1-2 victory in spite of playing on foreign ground and also, in spite of Marouane Fellaini’s absence, who had got suspended for the following 3 games.

Currently, there is another agreement waiting to be signed between the English football teams: West Ham offered to receive Everton’s striker Nikica Jelavic as cut-price alternative to Andy Carroll.

The Hammers have a £17 million deal to make Liverpool striker’s Upton Park loan a permanent offer at the end of the season, though they have already indicated that the asking price is way out of their league.

Unfortunately, the Hammers don’t have the finances to make Carroll’s move permanent either; in addition, Everton’s striker Jelavic, who was sent to reserves after scoring one single goal in 18 appearances, is now expected to cost less than half Liverpool’s asking price.

Everton are currently sitting comfortably on the 4th position of the Premier League table with with 30 points, right after Arsenal, while West Ham are struggling hard to remain on the 12th position with only 23 points. This being said, I am going to bet 10 units on Everton at 1.45, with odds from 888Sport.

Atletico Madrid – Barcelona [Prediction]

May 9, 2013 1 Betting, Soccer, Sports

Atletico Madrid will come into the game with Barcelona from a very packed week, after having played Celta Vigo on Wednesday; they will have to face Barcelona, whose planned celebrations for a victory were held at bay by their rivals from Madrid; and William Hill is offering the most lucrative odds for the bet we’re about to place.

Before the game with Celta Vigo, Atletico Madrid finished the game against Deportivo La Coruna in a goalless draw where neither of the two teams was able to find that niche to open the scoring table, as neither team had any clear chances. Even though they don’t have any chances left to finish on the second place; Atletico does have the third strongest away record in la Liga though, having taken 26 points in 17 matches.

Barcelona beat Real Betis with 4-2 in a game that showed the state of decline Barca is in, seeing as they were led on the scoring table twice, but thanks to the genius they can’t play without (Leo Messi, of course) who scored twice, and David Villa who is starting to gain some confidence in the game after his injury, they won the match. This time the huge ball possession Barcelona had worked in their favor, and they managed to close the scoring table in the 71 minute.

The last head to head encounter ended up in a demolishing 4-1, where Atletico Madrid’s early goal turned into a nightmare, when Barcelona managed to score 4 times in the span of 60 minutes and close off one of the most contested games in La Liga. Atletico Madrid would have wanted to bounce back, but they didn’t have the same spirit or audacity to do so.

I’m predicting the game to be at least half as disputed as the last one was, and I still think Barcelona still has something to prove, so next Sunday at 18:00 GMT+1, I expect them to put up a fight and win again; I am putting 7 units on Barcelona’s win at 1.95 with odds from William Hill.

Catania – Siena [Recap]

May 9, 2013 0 Betting, Soccer, Sports

With this loss against Catania, Siena seems doomed to join Pescara in the Serie B next season, after a year where they struggled, but didn’t manage to uphold that tiny lead that would have allowed them to stay in Serie A. Now they will have to struggle for that last breath of fresh Serie A air, and pray that other teams including Catania will continue playing good and help them overcome Palermo.

The game started at a slow pace, and Siena had the first occasion after 20 minutes, but then Gonzalo Bergessio started his show by managing to score all three goals of Catania. Siena had an even bigger blow to their Serie A hopes when Felipe was given a red card for a hand on ball really close to the penalty area. Giuseppe Iachini made his changes after the disaster was already unstoppable, thus proving them ineffective and borderline useless, even if his team started their attempts at an attack after the substitutions were made.

Catania on the other hand has the sixth best defense of the championship, and 12 matches ended up with clean sheets mainly thanks to Alberto Frison’s impeccable timings and blocking of shots. They might be able to even challenge Internazionale for their place or even move up higher considering the 2-point gap between them and the nerrazzuri. They could even challenge Lazio’s place seeing as there are only four points separating the two teams.

Seeing as I was right in prediction Catania would follow its good run in Serie A, I won the bet placed on them with 2.24 odds from betfair.

Schalke 04 – Hamburger SV [Recap]

May 2, 2013 0 Betting, Soccer, Sports

There is no inopportune moment for a good result, but Schalke‘s 4-1 win over Hamburg on Sunday afternoon was just miraculously well-timed. With their victory, I also won the 6 units I bet at Betfair.

In spite of the categorical result, it would be unfair to neglect the fact that Hamburger SV were tremendous opponents, since they went into the game as genuine Champions League contenders; but unfortunately for them, the dramatic result from Sunday made their boss reconsider: “It’s hard to talk about Europe after such a game” said Thorsten Fink.

Hamburg SV had actually taken the lead early on, when Marcell Jansen placed his header into the corner. In the match against Schalke, Fink chose to establish a special strategy, which unfortunately for them didn’t prove to be the best option. For example, Dennis Aogo was tasked with dropping deep in front of the centre-backs, but what Fink missed to take into account was that he might not be able to keep the ball long enough to make such a risky set-up work. As a proof, the ball bounced back quickly, so Julian Draxler, Raffael and Bastos had 30 meters of free space to run into.

Regarding Schalke, their latest result with Hambuger makes a welcome change, after a couple of weeks of mysteriously questionable and frustrating performances.
