Mainz – Bayer Leverkusen [Recap]

Last weekend, several matches ended in a pretty unexpected way. After the resounding victory achieved by Schalke against their rivals Borussia Dortmund, the German team Mainz has also made a nice figure at Coface Arena, by defeating neighbors Bayer Leverkusen with a 1-0 score. This also means that I lost the bet I placed on the victory of Bayer Leverkusen.

The players of Thomas Tuchel managed to put enough pressure on the shoulders of their opponents, and the Hungarian Adam Szalai had an enormous opportunity to score, but the ball was stopped by the crossbar.

On the other hand, Bayer had their chances too, with Stefan Kiessling looking particularly eager to break the deadlock. Unfortunately, his attempts were fought off by Christian Wetklo, who appeared to be in amazing shape.

In the second half, the hosts received a penalty after a handball sent by Manuel Friedrich. Also, in the second half there was a moment, when midfielder Andreas Ivanschitz left Bernd Leno with no chance, as he sent the ball directly into the right-hand corner of the net in the 61st minute.

With this loss, Bayer Leverkusen missed a great opportunity to outclass Borussia Dortmund, who lost the derby in favour of Schalke 04.

Result: -4, bet lost
