Opening round of Allsvenskan is here! We are going to zoom in at Boras Arena, where Elfsborg are hosting the champions Malmo FF in what promises to be an entertaining encounter.

For Malmo, the ambitions are the exact same each year, meaning that only winning the league is what matters, but also reaching the group stage in either Europa League or Champions League. Last season not all of those targets were accomplished as they could not pass by Vardar in the Champions League qualifiers. The season is fresh and the squad looks a bit different.

Midfielder Ander Christiansen left for new adventures in Belgium and left a big role to fill in his central midfield position. Also right back Anton Tinnerholm left for MLS. However, Malmo have not been lazy during the silly season and brought in box to box midfielder Fouad Bachirou from Ostersunds. They also captured winger Soren Rieks from IFK Goteborg, and right back Erik Larsson from Sundsvall.

On top of that, Icelandic international Arnor Ingvi Traustasson from AEK Athens (former IFK Norrkoping). These players have one thing in common. They were all key players for their respective teams, so Malmo are basically collecting key players from their rivals. A similar pattern as we have seen with Bayern Munich in Germany when they sign players from Dortmund.

Malmo remain strong on all positions and coach Magnus Pehrsson is flexible in using 3-5-2 or 5-3-2 or even a flat 4-4-2 when needed. Their ability to keep clean sheets is something we have seen a lot of in the pre-season, beating opponents such as Goteborg, Ostersunds, Gefle, Dalkurd and New England with 1-0 in all matches. It is a much more stingy and cynical Malmo team this year.

Elfsborg have done changes on the field and on the sideline, with coach Jimmy Thelin taking over. He came from Jonkoping Sodra who were relegated. While it might seem strange to appoint a coach who was part of a relegation, Jimmy Thelin was the man who promoted them from Superettan in the first place.

His job will be to establish Elfsborg in a position to compete for the European spots. Last season was very from an Elfsborg perspective on the 8th place, and conceding 59 goals in 30 matches, which was the highest number in the league. They did have the third best offense though, and all key players are still in the club.

Squad wise, Elfsborg have added a good piece in 35 year old midfielder Stefan Ishizaki from AIK. While age is against him, he will be a threat on all set pieces and smartness in the final third. Also midfielder Robert Gojani joined from Jonkoping Sodra as a result of following his former coach to the new club.

Elfsborg style of play is always in a high tempo at home on their artificial turf. Perhaps this is also their weakness, as it requires precision. Elfsborg’s defense is their weakness, and they conceded 3 goals against GAIS and 1 goal against Hammarby in the Swedish Cup.

Malmo do not need to be at their best to gain points, they have a winning mentality which often takes them far. With a more cynical style of play, they have found ways to punish teams and their mistakes. I see this being a narrow win and a controlled performance by Malmo.
