Catania – Siena [Recap]

With this loss against Catania, Siena seems doomed to join Pescara in the Serie B next season, after a year where they struggled, but didn’t manage to uphold that tiny lead that would have allowed them to stay in Serie A. Now they will have to struggle for that last breath of fresh Serie A air, and pray that other teams including Catania will continue playing good and help them overcome Palermo.

The game started at a slow pace, and Siena had the first occasion after 20 minutes, but then Gonzalo Bergessio started his show by managing to score all three goals of Catania. Siena had an even bigger blow to their Serie A hopes when Felipe was given a red card for a hand on ball really close to the penalty area. Giuseppe Iachini made his changes after the disaster was already unstoppable, thus proving them ineffective and borderline useless, even if his team started their attempts at an attack after the substitutions were made.

Catania on the other hand has the sixth best defense of the championship, and 12 matches ended up with clean sheets mainly thanks to Alberto Frison’s impeccable timings and blocking of shots. They might be able to even challenge Internazionale for their place or even move up higher considering the 2-point gap between them and the nerrazzuri. They could even challenge Lazio’s place seeing as there are only four points separating the two teams.

Seeing as I was right in prediction Catania would follow its good run in Serie A, I won the bet placed on them with 2.24 odds from betfair.
